The Lowdown on Updraft

Why Updraft?

With Updraft we set out to make our fastest gravel tire yet. We’ve covered our design philosophy before, but Bailey Van Etten, the designer behind Updraft, expanded on the tire’s specific design goals:

“We wanted to make sure that it provides confidence inspiring control and long-lasting durability. Whether you’re aiming for the top of the podium, or to have as much fun as possible on your way to the finish line, Updraft is the right tire for the job.”

How we did it
It started with our new 120 TPI (threads per inch) casing. This tighter weave of threads means less rubber coating. Less rubber = equals a lighter, more compliant tire. More on casings here.

We also equipped Updraft with our Fast rubber compound, chosen to reduce rolling resistance for quicker acceleration and easier sustained speed.

A minimal center tread was another key to minimizing Updraft’s rolling resistance. We could have given Updraft a regular center slick, but why not make it interesting? Van Etten found a design theme in the basalt columns seen in parts of Washington, his home state.

“This was a big part of the inspiration from a visual standpoint. Infusing visuals from the world around us, and doing it in a way that makes the tire fast and fun.”

To keep confidence (and speed) up in corners, Updraft features side lugs designed to dig in on loose terrain for a solid connection when cornering. Their staggered positioning provide tactile feedback, making for more-predictable traction as you lean into your turns.

Who’s it for?Anyone looking for a little edge on dry, hardpack gravel will appreciate Updraft. It’s our favorite race-day tire, but it’ll also make your everyday gravel rides more efficient.

Updraft is available in 700c x 35, 40, 45, and 50mm for a full range of use cases. Go narrow for fast, smooth gravel courses or size up for more cushion on harsher roads. Updraft also comes in both our Light & Supple and Durable casings. Choose Light & Supple if you prioritize weight and ride feel, or armor up with the Durable casing if you want extra protection on chunky routes. Both casings are available in black- and tan-wall options.
