Deep dive: our three new MTB tires

Three images of mountain bikers riding through forest trails.

In case you missed it, we recently launched three new MTB tires, each designed to complement one another:

Camrock: Cross-country tire. Speedy and supple.
Drawpoint: Downcountry tire. Playful and adaptable.
Clifty: Trail tire. Balanced and predictable.

Each of these tread designs is inspired by particular terrain and riding styles, but you can mix and match them to create the best mountain bike tire setup for wherever and however you ride. This modular system makes it easier than ever to find the best mountain bike tire setup for riding dirt your way.

CASINGS
The biggest story here is our new 120 TPI tubeless-ready casings. Made for a more-supple, lighter trail feel, these casings elevate the ride experience across terrain and riding styles.

Camrock and Drawpoint are both available in our new Light Trail casing.

  • 1.5 120 TPI layers that saves weight and conforms to the trail for better traction
  • Bead-to-bead puncture protection that defends against sharp rocks and roots
  • Our choice for XC racing or lighter-duty riding on smoother trails

Toward the other end of the spectrum, Clifty comes in our latest Durable Plus casing.

  • Two 120 TPI layers
  • Bead-to-bead puncture protection
  • Apex wedge to improve impact protection
  • Our choice for rugged trails

These new casings are designed to meet our high standards for weight and durability.

“We wanted a 120 TPI casing that reduced rotational weight while keeping the tubeless reliability our tires are known for. Historically, this was challenging given the thinner casing layers used on 120 TPI tires. However, new manufacturing techniques and reinforcements allowed us to deliver a reliable tubeless 120 TPI casing with responsive acceleration, and fine-tune the casing layup to maximize compliance under the tread cap. The step-up in both performance and ride comfort was immediately obvious and fun to ride,” said Zane Bushey, Teravail product manager.

TREAD DESIGN
Keen-eyed riders will spot a common visual theme running through Camrock, Drawpoint, and Clifty, yet as you progress through the lineup, each tire turns up the traction with larger lugs and more tread features. As our Industrial Designer Bailey Van Etten explains, “The gradient from least- to most-aggressive is clear in the lug height and amount of support on the shoulder lugs. This visible progression makes it easier for riders to choose the tire that lets them ride dirt their way.”

Camrock is our XC mountain bike tire designed for speed and smoothness on punchy hardpack terrain.

  • Low-profile tread pattern reduces rolling resistance
  • Linear pattern with minimal tread feature overlap for improves efficiency, compliance, and suppleness
  • Rounded tread profile provides predictable traction through flat corners
  • Run Camrock front and rear for XC riding and racing; for wet conditions, pair it with a Drawpoint up front to boost traction

Drawpoint is our downcountry tire designed for straight-line speed, braking power, and confident control on trails that feature flow and tech in the same lap.

  • Taller lugs than Camrock for more traction in loose and wet terrain
  • Center lugs designed with a ramped front and flat back to roll quickly and stop quickly
  • Elevated shoulder lugs with bracing provide support when cornering
  • Hybrid tread profile balances rolling speed and traction

Clifty is our trail tire designed for balanced performance in unpredictable terrain.

  • Larger, consistent lug size and spacing keep as much rubber in contact with the trail as possible
  • A shovel-shaped scoop on the back of the center lugs boosts braking traction
  • Transition lugs interlock with shoulder lugs for predictable traction as you lean into corners
  • Bracing on shoulder lugs provides plenty of support during deep cornering
  • Square tread profile provides larger contact patch for more traction

COMPOUNDS
Our mountain bike tires come in multiple rubber compounds ranging from firm and fast to soft and sticky so you can ride dirt your way.

  • Camrock comes in our Fast Compound, which uses a firmer rubber for lower rolling resistance.
  • Drawpoint comes equipped with our Grip Compound, a softer, sticker rubber that conforms to the trail better for more traction and stability.
  • Clifty is available in both Grip or Grip Plus Compound. Grip Plus features our softest, slowest-rebound rubber for maximum contact and control on the trail.
